107 Years of Music
The Madeira Mandolin Orchestra® is getting ready to celebrate its 107th anniversary with its traditional Special Anniversary Concert which, this year, will be the first to be celebrated in its new home: the “Sunrise” Auditorium of VidaMar Resort Madeira Hotel.
Founded on February 18, 1913, the Orchestra is part of the Association of Recreio Musical União da Mocidade, located in São Roque (Funchal). Its foundation aimed to be able to involve and captivate the local youth for a local cultural and musical project, a goal that allowed the Orchestra to evolve and grow as a musical formation, mainly in the context of the mandolin.
This growth, whose main “architect” was Maestro Eurico Martins, allowed the Orchestra to acquire local, national and international recognition as the oldest and youngest mandolin orchestra in Europe. This distinction, of relevance in a region of excellence within the European community, results from the age of its foundation and the ages of the performers who make up the Orchestra (between 14 and 46 years old).
The 107th Anniversary Special Concert will take place on February 22nd, starting at 5 pm, and, under the direction of Maestro André Martins, the Madeira Mandolin Orchestra® will present a classical music program adapted to mandolins and which will feature with the special participation of the Portuguese tenor, Carlos Guilherme, and other surprises that made this afternoon’s birthday unique and memorable for all those present.
