Classical and Popular Music to the Mandolin Sound
It was with a program with classical and popular / traditional music, at the sound of the mandolins, that the Madeira Mandolin Orchestra marked its Special Concert inserted in the World Tourism Day, at the VIDAMAR Hotel Resort Madeira Congress Center.
World Tourism Day was founded on 27 September 1980 and highlights the importance of the tourism and its cultural, economic, political and social valences. The Orchestra, being the oldest and youngest mandolin orchestra in Europe, a mark / distinction of relevance in a region of excellence within the European community, has not failed to highlight this day.
Conducted by its artistic director, André Martins, the Orchestra took the stage of the ‘Sunrise’ Auditorium with its 25 performers and had the special presence of the Madeiran folk group Madeira Despique Gente Antiga who, with their traditional folk instruments, provided a show that united the classic sound of mandolins with the Madeiran folk songs.
The group Madeira Despique Gente Antiga was founded in 1995 by friends and family, in São Roque. Its foundation was with the objective of, through the conviviality, highlight the Madeiran cultural music.
The project has been growing over the years that, today, the group is recognized throughout Madeira and around the world, especially in the places of the Madeiran diaspora (places where people from Madeira immigrated). This concert of the World Tourism Day marked the premiere of performances between the Madeira Mandolin Orchestra and Madeira Despique Gente Antiga, which featured, among others, the popular songs “O Vinho”, “A Madeira é um Bailinho” and “Quem Não Bebe”.
After the concert, one of the members of the respective popular group, thanking the invitation, highlighted “the very pleasant experience”, hoping that this will be the first of many experiences.
